CH2M Hill Polar Services (CPS) and UMIAQ are fully committed to safe field operations for our project clients. Our staff includes lifelong Barrow residents and subsistence hunters who are extremely knowledgeable about the local weather and sea ice conditions, wildlife behavior, and specialized vehicle operation. We can provide Bear Guards and Ice Guides for your project as appropriate or provide on-site training. CPS / UMIAQ does not issue firearms to researchers but properly trained individuals may carry weapons within legal limits.
In addition, CPS provides several resources to NSF-funded research projects to enhance field safety. This includes in-person training prior to deployment, web tutorials, helmets, recommended equipment lists, and sea ice survival bags. Training and equipment is available to projects funded through other agencies though payment would need to be arranged separately.
Contact UMIAQ’s Operations Manager (listed under the Staff page) for further information, or to determine what support would be appropriate for your planned activities.
