Neither CPS nor UIC Science provides meal plans or compensation for meals to researchers. Such support should be included in the associated institutional grant or paid by individuals out of pocket and reimbursed (if applicable) through the employer.

            Frequently Asked Questions, regardless of CPS meal support:           

– I’m a vegetarian/vegan/have certain food allergies.

If you have special dietary restrictions the best option is to shop at one of the local grocery stores and cook for yourself. All lodging options include cooking facilities and utensils.

– How do I get cash to pay for meals?

You may be able to obtain a cash advance from your home institution prior to your trip. In Barrow there is a Wells Fargo branch with ATM and a full service counter. At the service counter you can withdraw cash from your personal account with a debit card from any bank with no fee. Also, all restaurants and stores in Barrow accept credit cards (Visa and MasterCard). Money orders and Western Union are also available.

– When can I eat?

Check with individual restaurant and stores for hours of operation. It is customary to call ahead before arriving with a large group.

– I’m arriving on the evening flight into Barrow. Will restaurants still be open? Yes, all Barrow restaurants will be open upon your arrival. You can also call and pre-order for a pick-up while you are waiting for your bags.
